Clearing the Fog on Cloud Computing Security
How to benefit from cloud computing without putting sensitive data at risk? The European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) published a 123 page report on the subject and found that Cloud Computing actually can enhance data security.
The study covers the technical, policy and legal implications and has practical recommendations for how to address the risks and maximize the benefits for users.
Enisa says its report is the first to take an independent, in-depth look at all the security and privacy issues of cloud computing, outlining some of the information security benefits of it, as well as 35 key security risks.
A preliminary survey among organizations made clear that security is one of their main concerns in embracing cloud computing.
But the study points out that cloud computing is a security enabler, because the scale and flexibility of cloud computing gives its providers a security edge. They can instantly call on extra defensive resources like filtering and re-routing, roll out new security patches more efficiently than most organizations and keep more comprehensive evidence for diagnostics.
Other important risks include software lock-ins, failures in mechanisms separating customers’ data and applications, and legal risks such as the failure to comply with data protection legislation.
Enisa was supported by a group of subject matter expert comprising representatives from several industries, academia and governmental organizations.
