‘Foreign’ Company Allowed to Offer Wireless in Canada

The Canadian government overruled its regulator CRTC Friday and declared start-up wireless carrier Globalive, financed largely by an Egyptian company, to be Canadian. The company can now start offering service in Canada.

As of today, Globalive is stepping into the Canadian mobile business under its brand name Wind Mobile to offer competitively priced mobile services. This might lead to a real price war, something the Canadian wireless industry hasn’t seen in almost a decade.

Rogers Communications, Canada’s largest mobile carrier, said it welcomed the new competition, while Bell Canada and Telus Communications said they disagreed with the government’s conclusion. However, neither said they intended to challenge the decision in court. The three companies are already using discount brands in effort to secure customers.
