Commissioner Malmstrom responds to Joint Industry Letter on Special Access

The EU aims to encourage a pro-competitive access regime for telecommunications that allows efficient market entry to all providers in its trade negotiations, states Commission Cecilia Malmstrom in her response to a Joint Industry letter on Special Access.

In this letter, industry players from INTUG, Verband den Anbeiter von Telekommunkations -unt Mehrwertdiensten and the Computer and Communications Industry Association highlighted the need for the EU to address fair and transparent access to third countries’ telecommunications networks. In her response, Commissioner Malmstrom reiterates the EU’s efforts to push for access to “essential facilities, amongst others, openness and a ban on foreign equity caps.” She highlights the importance of “public advocacy” work and concludes by welcoming the possibility to continue working with the industry players on this topic in the future.
