FttH and FttB to Overtake DSL/Cable in Japan and Korea, OECD

The OECD recently published new data on broadband in its member countries. Fiber-to-the-Home (FttH) and Fiber-to-the-Building (FttB) subscriptions now comprise 9 per cent of all broadband connections in the OECD (up from 8 per cent in December 2007).

OECD Broadband Update Released

The OECD released a background report with updated international data on broadband usage. The number of broadband subscribers in the OECD reached 235 million by December 2007, an increase of 18 per cent from 200 million subscribers in December 2006. This growth increased broadband penetration rates to 20.0 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants up from 16.9 in December 2006.

More than Half of Europeans Use Internet Regularly, ICT Progress Report

Over 250 million Europeans are now regular Internet users, 80 per cent of them have broadband connections and 60 per cent of public services in the EU are fully available online. Two thirds of schools and half of doctors make use of fast Internet connections, thanks to strong broadband growth in Europe.

Study Gives High Marks to US Internet

Contradicting earlier studies, conventional wisdom and politicians’ rhetoric, researchers from the French business school INSEAD say that the Internet infrastructure of the United States is one of the world’s best and getting better: the country ranked fourth in the world behind just three European nations: Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland. Eight EU Members Ahead of U.S. in Broadband, Commission Says

Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden are world leaders in broadband deployment with penetration rates over 30 per cent by the end of 2007, according to the European Commission’s 13th Progress Report on the Single Telecoms Market, issued today.
