The number of economies where fiber to the home has established a significant and growing market presence has nearly doubled over the past 18 months, according to an updated global ranking issued yesterday by the FTTH Councils of Asia‐Pacific, Europe and North America.

Consumers benefit from better telecoms services and higher investment levels in countries where the national telecoms regulatory authority has strong powers and is active in using them, according to a report published by the European Competitive Telecommunications Association (ECTA).

The OECD recently published new data on broadband in its member countries. Fiber-to-the-Home (FttH) and Fiber-to-the-Building (FttB) subscriptions now comprise 9 per cent of all broadband connections in the OECD (up from 8 per cent in December 2007).

INTUG has identified NGNs as a strategic priority for its members, contacts and for business users globally. As a result, it commissioned a detailed paper by Stratix Consulting to analyze the issues from a business user perspective, recognizing that the focus in regulatory debate until now had been directed towards the telecom operators’ perspectives.

British Telecom (BT) has planned a major upgrade of its network to become one of the world’s broadband leaders. According to the Telegraph, the new service will serve up to 10m homes by 2012.

The European Competitive Telecoms Association has welcomed the proposals from the European Parliament to amend the EU Telecoms Framework, but warned that many of the amendments approved by the Parliament’s Industry Committee on 7 July protect and favor dominant firms at the expense of competition in the telecoms sector.
