Google has thrown its weight behind ambitious plans to bring Internet access to 3 billion people in Africa and other emerging markets, the Financial Times reports. The Internet search giant has joined forces with cable TV magnate John Malone and HSBC to set up a new company, O3b Networks, named after the “other 3bn” people for whom fast fiber Internet access networks are not likely to be commercially viable.

After 260 rounds of bidding over more than seven weeks the the 700MHz wireless spectrum auction has ended. According to a statement by FCC chief Kevin Martin, the auction took in almost twice the amount estimated.
