As of this year, China and India may have the world’s largest mobile markets, but the African continent is catching up fast. As of mid-2007, there were over 231 million mobile subscribers. This represents an increase of 45 per cent year-on-year, a rate that has made the continent the world’s single fastest-growing regional mobile market.

Europe to Allow Mobile Phone Use on Aircraft

The European Commission yesterday introduced rules to harmonize the technical and licensing requirements for mobile communication services on aircraft. Passengers’ phones will communicate through an onboard cellular network connected to the ground via satellite.

India Due to Have Second-Largest Mobile Subscriber Base

India’s rapidly growing mobile subscriber base passed the 250 million mark, according to a press release from the Telecom Regulatory Authority Of India.

With a monthly growth of 8-9 million mobile phone users, India is expected to surpass the U.S. soon, which currently has 260.50 million subscribers. China tops the wireless network market with a subscriber base of 550.50 million.Read more…

INTUG is Lobbying the EC on Mobile Access and Call Origination

This week, INTUG sent a letter to the European Commission concerning “access and call origination on public mobile telephone networks” – so-called Market 15. INTUG believes that the current Review of the European Regulatory Framework provides an opportunity to enhance the effectiveness of sector specific telecommunications regulation. Therefore the Users Group felt it was necessary to write the Commission to highlight enterprise users’ needs for pan-EU mobile services, which are key to their business productivity plans.
