The number of economies where fiber to the home has established a significant and growing market presence has nearly doubled over the past 18 months, according to an updated global ranking issued yesterday by the FTTH Councils of Asia‐Pacific, Europe and North America.

The OECD recently published new data on broadband in its member countries. Fiber-to-the-Home (FttH) and Fiber-to-the-Building (FttB) subscriptions now comprise 9 per cent of all broadband connections in the OECD (up from 8 per cent in December 2007).

The OECD released a background report with updated international data on broadband usage. The number of broadband subscribers in the OECD reached 235 million by December 2007, an increase of 18 per cent from 200 million subscribers in December 2006. This growth increased broadband penetration rates to 20.0 subscriptions per 100 inhabitants up from 16.9 in December 2006.

Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden are world leaders in broadband deployment with penetration rates over 30 per cent by the end of 2007, according to the European Commission’s 13th Progress Report on the Single Telecoms Market, issued today.
